While I was searching the internet to find a "How to" write a proposal letter to a literary agent, I found Michelle Rowen's letter. After reading it, I was curious what this "Dearly Departed" book, which the published title is Bitten & Smitten, was about. Throughout the entire book, I laughed and kept thinking this Sarah girl was really a magnet for trouble.

Sarah Dearly goes on a date and the guy ends up being a vampire, who bites Sarah. The vampire is killed by vampire slayers and leaves Sarah with no one to acclimate her to this new dark life. Luckily, Sarah runs into Thierry a 600+ year old vampire, who is tired of existing. They meet on a bridge where Thierry is trying to kill himself. This is only the beginning of Sarah's vampire adventure.

Rowen makes the reader wonder what will happen to Sarah next, which makes this book a page turner. As I read Bitten & Smitten, I couldn't help but laugh throughout Sarah's paranormal journey. She finds trouble and the way she handles each misfortune it made me wonder if Sarah would survive as a vampire. The author's humor is sarcastic and each character's unique personalities are portrayed well. Thierry's depressive state and controlled manner is shown in how he speaks and deals with Sarah. The main character, Sarah, is a bit of a scatter brain and very carefree. Her naïve way of viewing her vampire life keeps the story adventurous and Sarah in danger.

Romance blooms between the fledgling vampire, Sarah, and the very old Thierry. However, there are obstacles that get in the way of the romance really heating up between the two, such as, slayers, another fledgling and the fact that Thierry is married to a vampire named, Veronique, who is gorgeous.

I loved Bitten & Smitten. It was funny and creative. This is not "just another" vampire story. Rowen took us on a paranormal adventure the way Bridget Jones or Carol Burnett would have with humor and mishaps through Sarah Dearly. Bitten & Smitten is a book I've recommended to friends and co-workers telling them they will be in for 300 plus pages of laughs.

Want the whole series in a packet or number them already! I stopped reading the series because it is really confusing when you have a large collection and they get lost in the library or gee which one is next?
That said the book was good. Nice romance twist and the character is VERY likable.
Bitten & Smitten starts with a familiar and amusing premise that I happen to enjoy - a quirky, sort of socially gawky girl meets tall, dark, and fangy and romantic hilarity ensues. Unfortunately in this particular book, the lead character, Sarah Dearly, is a wee bit too frustrating to be quirky and the hilarity fell flat. It starts with Sarah being buried in a graveyard by her blind date (no idea WHY her erstwhile suitor had to bury her, as the other two turnings that happened in the book didn't seem to require graveyards, but as the erstwhile suitor ended up shish-kebobbed shortly thereafter, and the rest of the story was laden with some unexplained stretches of intelligence, too, I'm not going to make that big a deal out of it) and goes downhill from there. Unfortunately, the sequence of successive horrors that Sarah kept tripping into didn't serve to amuse me as much as I'd hoped, and a couple put a strain on my intellect.

I was hoping for a light, engaging read that gave me a few chuckles, and I suppose I shouldn't be too disappointed, as two out of three isn't THAT bad, but given that the one that missed was the "engaging" part, I ended up feeling a little unsatisfied. I had a hard time warming up to Sarah, though admittedly, she did appear to have the right intentions for the most part, and by the time I did warm up to her, other things were going on that just annoyed me. I don't want to spoil anything, but come on, how long have vamps been around? And they can get together to socialize but haven't figured out that working together to fight against the threat of hunters just MIGHT be a bit more effective than the "walk around until you get staked" plan? Uh...right. And it takes the recently fired executive assistant to tell them that? How are they not extinct already???

I admit to having a prejudice against plot points that are outside the bounds of common sense because it does a serious number on my willing suspension of disbelief, and there were just too many things in Bitten & Smitten that pushed that button for me to be able to rate the book any higher. I'm not giving up on the series, because there WERE aspects of the story I did enjoy, but my patience won't last if the second book is of a similar vein...no pun intended.
I had been waiting for months for the kindle edition price to go down before purchasing this. I decided to treat myself and finally purchase this anyways. This was a quick read for me, over all I did enjoy it and glad that I finally got to read it, however some of the story fell flat. The attempted humor was off. The "Smitten" part im not 100% sure with..just who was she smitten with? This could have used a little bit more romance in my opinion. I will be reading the rest of the series, but will wait until the prices get lower!
Sarah's life changed in a heartbeat. One minute she was human....the next minute...not so much! This is a fun read about Sarah who is trying to figure out what her life is all about now...and did I mention all while trying not to get killed by vampire hunters. Thierry, a master vampire, has a death wish (after 600 years) and they both end up jumping off a bridge...not once, but twice. He agrees to show her the ropes while she continues to learn via trial and error. I loved this book and found myself smiling and laughing while reading it. I do recommend this book and hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.
