And that's what most of this book feels like. About 1/4 of the way through I found myself skimming rather than reading. A reviewer on another sight said this book reads like a (longer) HQ romance, and unfortunately, I have to agree. I found the inner dialogue irritating; I also found the h/' s constant speculation about what the H/ felt, believed, thought even more irritating. Contrived conflict and contrived misunderstandings do not make for a compelling read, IMHO. The story didn't lack action, but the action scenes lacked true suspense. The ending was predictable HQ 'HEA', slave isn't who he seems, or just any old Han Solo, of course.....with a baby thrown in for good measure, because we all know if you don't have a baby, it's not a real HEA.

At the same time, I feel like I'm being harsh. I read a lot of self-published/Kindle Unlimited books and this one is far better written than a lot of those. But I just couldn't get past the author's style and the general 'feel' of the story. I don't have anything against HQ's; it just isn't my cup of tea. I kept wavering between a 3-4 star review because the author did do a great job in her own genre/voice. However, I also hesitate to put too high of a rating because I wouldn't recommend this book to any of my friends, and wouldn't want it recommended to me. If you like HQ books, you'll Love this. If you don't, you can appreciate the author's hard work but won't find the story a compelling read.

I didn't know how to rate this story. I really liked it for many reasons. I thought the story line was broken up into 3 main parts. The beginning was very intriguing when the main characters are introduced to each other and the author introduces us into a futuristic debauchery the likes of the ancient Roman Empire, with captured slaves and all. Extremely clever and well thought-out. The captain has to catch her mind up with her ideals as she is faced with a slave sent to her. That first part was great, if a bit slow, and ended interestingly.

The second part with the interactions of the slave and the captain were interesting as well. But. The over dramatized emotions. I thought some of the premises the author brought up were extraordinary. But all the anger. All the weeping. Must we have juvenile emotional outbursts? We know they are having a hard time, but if they weren't strong people, they wouldn't be where the were in the plot. The end of all this flood of emotional puke were some interesting, heart to heart revelations from the slave to the captain. That should have been like one of the most important parts of the book, but it got drowned out.

Then the third and last part of the book starts and the slave and the captain are back to square one. What? Did we just go through all that emotional vomit for NOTHING?? The plot was good enough, the science and adventure was good enough that I stuck with it, but I really wanted to slap the characters silly at this point. The whole last part of the book, the characters were awful. It was like the author had to think of artificial means to keep the drama going to keep us interested. No. The slave and the captain were, like, trying to save their lives! That is excitement enough! Their emotional drama should have ended at part 2. It would have made more sense. And it would have given more depth to part 3, and let them evolve as characters instead of stunting them in their growth. Ironically, the author made the slave a slave to what she thought his emotions should be. Sometimes, a character just needs to be free, just like you and me. lol

This is the first novel I've read that has been recommended to me as a romance with a tragically hurt hero rescued by a strong woman. Oh yiiiiisssss. I love to finagle with these kinds of themes in my own writing, and I'm delighted to find out it's a "thing" other people like that exists out there! But anyway, onto my review

Fighter pilot Shaylah is highly decorated, captain of her own ship, and generally a badass sort of character. She takes leave with a friend and is given access to Wolf, a sex slave of five years. He does not obey merely because of his station, but because of a collar he wears. It permits control of his libido, his thoughts, pain, and can even inflict death. Though subservient, he is not broken and Shaylah wants to help him. In fact, she’ll even have to risk her position and her life to save him!

So, I must say that Wolf was never quite as broken as I was hoping for *blush*. Yes he suffers from being a slave, but my personal preference was for Shaylah to really bring him up from nothing. However, whenever he’d regain some of his strength/confidence/what-have-you, I was glad to see that Shaylah did not suddenly lose her own and become a weakling. The sci fi element was lite, but still had enough to be enjoyable, including a space battle! The sex I felt was a bit "meh" and repetitive, but not over the top. What most bothered me was that the couple had their misunderstandings OFTEN. I can understand a few, but when it's like a running gag, it is annoying and hurts the story. You’d think after they've bared their souls after the last five misunderstandings they wouldn't take a minute to clarify their situation a bit. But it's not as grating as other books where both partners get unrealistically depressed and broody on top of those misunderstandings. Being somewhat upset, such as this novel had, is perfectly OK and realistic. They were a great couple from beginning to end, trying to understand each other in different ways throughout. I enjoyed how well they complimented each other!

Overall it was a really fun story with enough talk of punishments and torture that I really felt for the hero, but not so much to be squicked out. Plus he was hot in almost every description. And I was happy to see the characters when they were happy together or working on a problem. Glad this was my first book by Davis, because I certainly would like to give some of her others a try!
